Mozambique’s National Union of Hotel, Tourism and Similar Workers says it is concerned about the increasing number of lay-offs in the sector since last year. Some tourist resorts, especially in the centre of the country, are facing closure owing to the political-military tension affecting some provinces, union representative Helena Pechisso said on Friday.
This was one of the themes debated at the eighth Hotel and Tourism Industry Workers Union Council of the city and province of Maputo. Participants said there was a need to strengthen partnerships with labour conflict mediation institutions and employers, with a view to improving the work situation of workers.
Participants approved the creation of the provincial bureau, working commissions and brigades to prepare the fifth Conference of Hotel Industry, Tourism and Similar Workers scheduled to take place next October. Pechisso said that the unanimous approval of documents, including the business plan and budget for 2017, represented an excellent degree of inclusion of members in union decision-making.
