Nine employees of the Geral de Marrere Hospital in Nampula city have been charged with misappropriation of funds.
According to O País, those accused include nurses and administrative staff who were paid more than the salaries specified for their categories of employment.
The case was reported to the Nampula provincial Anti-Corruption Office anonymously. “We received an anonymous tip regarding some irregularities at the Marrere General Hospital,” attorney Francisco Bauque explained.
“As a result, we initiated preliminary investigations and found that the allegations were true. We asked the judge for a warrant and ended up detaining seven of the nine officials involved. Some were given parole and two are still missing.”
The district health service and Woman in Social Action confirm the report. Aguinaldo Mariano, Chief Medical Officer of the Nampula District, said that the defendants had been suspended from their posts and are not receiving their salaries.
