The terrorists beheaded teacher Damião Tangassi. Teacher Tangassi was well known in Muatide and in Matambalale where he taught in a school devastated by the barbaric actions of terrorists.
Damião Males Tangassi was truly selftaught. A Makonde ethnic and devoted husband, he was surprised together with his family in the woods of Muatide in Muidumbe sitting around a fire where they tried to scare off ferocious animals and endure fear and do something in order to eat. On the fateful day, the terrorists did not look at what he represented to thousands of children, young people and parents who had passed through his hands for two decades.
Professor Tangassi worked selflessly to educate a different generation, but the war was to stop this process. Today, with all his students dispersed, he had hope of starting again, where he had left off. Unfortunately, the terrorists took possession of him and mocked his dignity with bayonets and torture.
Homage to Professor Tangassi. Homage to all the victims of terrorism in Cabo Delgado and in the world.
In life, Professor Tangassi dreamed of one day telling children and their grandchildren about the suffering his people are having today from the barbaric acts of terrorists. In a canoe in April when he was fleeing one of the biggest attacks in the district, Tangassi wrote an item he posted on his Facebook, saying “I still hope one day to tell the young people about some of the atrocities in this part of the country, in the confidence that everything has its beginning but also knows its end”.
Unfortunately, the district government of Muidumbe in Cabo Delgado province issued a circular on 23 October telling all civil servants to be present at their workplace by 1 November. Just then, the terrorists, who had attacked the district in April, returned and again destroyed property and killed civilians and soldiers. Among the victims was a teacher, Damião Males Tangassi; he was murdered with his niece, killed in cold blood by the terrorists while she was giving birth.
The teacher’s relatives are currently in Pemba. But it is reported that his wife was forced to witness the macabre act of murder of her husband, the teacher. The woman is in shock and traumatised. Professor Tangassi’s family had been safely in Pemba since April, but their sense of duty and patriotism led them to follow higher orders and return to Muidumbe.
Damião Males Tangassi, 44, married and father of four children, was born in Muatide, Muidumbe district, and started teaching in 2001. Tangassi was assigned to the Matambalale Primary School, one of the eleven attacked by terrorists.
Between 31 October and 1 November with his family and others he managed to escape, but with the situation of his niece were found in the woods by the terrorists.
Professor Damião Males Tangassi was beheaded in front of his children, now in the hands of the terrorists, his wife and his niece. The death of Professor Tangassi demonstrates another facet of the terrorists; the circumstances and the power of the State to defend its civil servants …
Homage to all the victims of terrorism in Cabo Delgado and in the world.
