Mozambique’s HIV/Aids prevalence rate in adults aged 15-49 rose from 11.5 percent in 2009 to 13.2 percent in 2015, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.
Tete has the lowest rate, with 5.2 percent, while Gaza continues to have the highest HIV prevalence rates at 24.4 percent.
The update does not reveal the numbers of the new infections, but the data does point to the possibility of the current numbers reflecting a long-standing adherence to antiretroviral treatment.
The figures released by the Ministry of Health are part of a survey on health indicators among Mozambicans in the period from 2009 to 2015.
Women continue to be the worst affected, with a prevalence rate of 15.4 percent against 10.1 percent in men.
In terms of age range, the 35 to 39 years age group is highest, a shift compared to previous years, where most people infected were between 25 and 29 years old. This increase in age could suggest longevity among patients on antiretroviral treatment, but there is a change in terms of the most affected age groups.
The city of Maputo, where numbers have increased slightly from 16.8 percent to 16.9 percent, is among the regions with the highest number of patients.
