Frelimo Assembly of the Republic deputy Sebastião Dengo, who died on Thursday at his Inhambane home after a long illness, was buried on Saturday in the city’s municipal cemetery.
The qualities of the parliamentarian, who was a member of the Parliament’s Standing Committee, a Veteran of the National Liberation Struggle and a member of the Frelimo Central Committee, were highlighted in messages read out at the funeral in the Noble Hall of the City Council of Inhambane.
“Thank you, Deputy Dengo. Your sense of humanity, serenity and consideration will continue to characterise the decisions of this great house, where for many years you have made your contribution to the good of the country,” said first vice president of the Assembly of the Republic [ First Deputy Speaker] António Amélia in the funeral eulogy.
Frelimo’s secretary general, Eliseu Machava, said that the country owed a debt of gratitude to Dengo for his dedication to the national cause, his voluntary work in the national liberation struggle, and for his direction of government and Frelimo structures.
“We are shaken. The Frelimo that Dengo has served will remain steadfast, pursuing its purposes, as in the achievement of the total and complete independence of Mozambique. Thank you, Comrade Sebastião Dengo,” said Eliseu Machava.
Governor of Inhambane, Daniel Chapo, said the province would miss Dengo, because he still had much to give, teaching the several generations and the whole of society. “His is an irreparable loss,” Chapo said.
Speaking on behalf of all veterans of the national liberation struggle, Provincial Director of the Combatants Lúcia Mathe promised to continue the deceased’s struggle for the welfare of the country.
Sebastião Dengo was the first administrator of the Govuro district after national independence, having also served as provincial director of Communal Villages and Agriculture. He was first secretary of the Frelimo Provincial Committee in Inhambane, member of the Central Committee and deputy of the Assembly of the Republic.
During the colonial era, he served five years in prison in Mabalane as a political prisoner.
Sebastião Dengo dies at age 76 and leaves a widow and five children.
