Chinese companies in Mozambique complain that it is difficult to hire Mozambican workers because employment centres do not have databases of the employment situation and staff on the market.
Companies say this renders training Mozambicans receive in China useless, as after the graduates return to Mozambique they are lost by the state and not included in the job centre databases.
This was the concern expressed on Friday by the Chinese ambassador to Mozambique at a seminar organized by the Ministry of Labour for Chinese companies working in the country. Li Chunhua says companies have many open vacancies but no candidates.
“We need greater interconnection between these graduates and Chinese companies,” the ambassador concluded.
Mozambicans trained in China are preferred by Chinese companies because they speak their language, facilitating communication and work processes.
The Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Vitoria Diogo, recognized the lack of basic data in Mozambican job centres and has challenged her staff to resolve the problem.
“It makes no sense to have compatriots trained in China and other countries return and find no employment while companies with Chinese capital are entering the country and need skilled labour. Yet they have no way to hire them because our job centres are not aggressive enough to get the information they need to be on top of events – to get out of their comfort zone and go to companies and verify what vacancies exist so as to be able to advertise in a more creative way,” the minister said.
At Friday’s ‘s seminar, which was launched to inform managers of Chinese companies about Mozambican labour legislation, Diogo revealed that about 1,200 foreign workers were expelled from the country for various irregularities last year.
