Former Mozambican president Armando Guebuza said in Maputo yesterday that the case of so-called hidden debts case has been marked by “much rumour” with “shadowy goals”, and spoke about defending the independence of the judiciary.
“There is a lot of rumour, a lot of dust in all this,” Armando Guebuza said in his first public statement on the case, adding: “There is some dust that comes out spontaneously, and some that is even provoked, for shadowy goals.”
His eldest son, Ndambi Guebuza, and his private secretary, Inês Moiane, are among the ten detained in the hidden debt investigation in Mozambique.
Mozambique’s Attorney General’s Office accuses Ndambi Guebuza of accepting US$33 million (EUR 29.5 million) to facilitate contacts between the proponents of the loan operation and his father, who is not a defendant in the case.
Speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony honouring Mozambican musician Gabriel Chiau, the former president said that the case has been characterised by rumours, but defended the independence of the judiciary.
“I believe that justice must be done; let justice be done without interference, because we are aware of the importance of the correct resolution of this issue,” the former Mozambican president said.

The hidden debts case centres on the endorsement by the former Mozambican government of more than US$2 billion in loans contacted in 2013 and 2014 by state-owned fishing and maritime security companies.
Mozambican and US courts both consider that part of this money was used to pay bribes to Mozambican and foreign individuals.
