Mozambique is seeking access to monetary, movable and real estate assets abroad that are suspected to have been purchased with money from the ‘hidden debts’ scheme, AIM Mozambique reports.
Mozambican authorities have requested the cooperation of neighbouring South Africa, which, according to ongoing investigations, may be the location of assets held by Mozambicans accused in the case.
Newspaper “Domingo” has however learned from a source close to the process that Mozambique may again be competing with the United States, which has already made similar requests.
Number of ‘arguidos’ rises to 21
The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) list of ‘formally named suspects’ [arguidos] has now swollen to 21 individuals, according to the “Noticias” Saturday edition.
Former deputy finance minister Isaltina Lucas is not a member of this group but is responding in a case concerning the financial liability of 16 managers involved in the contraction of the debts which the PGR has asked the Administrative Court to rule on.
The defendants, already in detention, have seen property and goods designated as having been acquired with funds from undeclared debts seized.
Among those being investigated are public servants and ordinary citizens suspected of abuse of office or function, abuse of trust, embezzlement and money laundering.
The list advanced by the PGR in mid-January includes 18 people who illegally benefited from the undeclared debts contracted by companies EMATUM, Proindicus and MAM between 2013 and 2014.
