Heavy rains in the northern city of Nampula over the past three weeks have left 469 people homeless with the complete destruction of about a hundred houses.
However, the Permanent Secretary of Nampula district, Olindo Soca, pointed out that during the last week there have been no deaths as people are heeding the warnings about the dangers of electrocution and crossing swollen rivers. Giving details of the destruction, he noted that, since 7 January, 97 houses have been totally demolished, with 74 homes partially destroyed along with two classrooms and a church.
Soca said that the worst hit areas were the neighbourhoods of Murrapaniua, Namicopo, and Muatala. He explained that in Murrapaniua there are no drainage ditches so whenever it rains there is nowhere for the water to run off safely.
Nampula city is the provincial capital and has about 750,000 inhabitants spread across six administrative posts.
