Mozambique: National Roaming Regulation, changes to the FSAU approved
The murder roughly three weeks ago of a Renamo member in Quelimane’s Bairro Novo neighbourhood has sparked fears that death squads are deliberately targeting members of the party.
One of those who suspects who is being hunted is Noah, currently head of the Renamo bench in the Zambezia Provincial Assembly and a high-profile party figure in the province, reports Diario da Zambezia.
According to the newspaper, Mavereca found out through sources that there was a group on his heels, who had on one occasion gone to his home but not found him there. The paper also learned that Mavereca had been followed into his neighbourhood by a car which then turned back without approaching him.
From then on, the Renamo member, fearing his life was at risk, started taking precautions. He left his home and at this point is still at large. His phone is off, but the Diário da Zambezia reporting team knows that he can communicate with the other members of his party when necessary.
On Tuesday, a Renamo party source said that he had spoken to Mavereca and that, when asked if he was well, Mavereca said that he was not saying where he could be found.
Noé Mavereca has been a Renamo member for 20 years. He dedicated his youth to the party and took over the political delegate portfolio in Quelimane when he came to Zambezia. He became head of the Renamo bench in Quelimane municipal assembly and has headed the Renamo majority in the Zambezia provincial assembly since 2014.
