This event is a work in progress that seeks to bring the philosophy behind the hands and their multiple functionalities in the process of being in life and on earth.
On this day, people are encouraged to embrace dance for their enjoyment and share the joy of movement with others. As we celebrate World Dance Day 2024 today, here’s all you need to know about the day.
World Dance Day, is a worldwide celebration that pays tribute to the art form of dance and promotes its various forms as a universal value. The day also aims to raise awareness about the inherent value of dance and empower the dance community to showcase their work to a wider audience.
The idea of International Dance Day was conceived by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), an essential partner of UNESCO in the area of performing arts. Every year, the committee selects a renowned choreographer or dancer to deliver a special message to the global dance community, highlighting the significance of dance and its ability to connect people worldwide.
International Dance Day 2024: Date and Origin
International Dance Day is annually on April 29. This year, in 2024, it will be celebrated on Monday. Commemorating the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, the father of modern ballet, this day was first founded in 1982 by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), in collaboration with UNESCO Performing Arts, with an idea to celebrate the beauty and diversity of dance and recognise its ability to transcend cultural barriers and bring people together.
Since then, it has evolved into a worldwide celebration since its inception, with dance communities, schools, companies, and organizations around the world hosting events. These events usually involve performances, workshops, dance festivals, lectures, and other activities that aim to promote awareness of dance as an art form and its cultural importance.
International Dance Day 2024: Theme and Significance
The theme for International Dance Day in 2024 has not yet been announced by the International Dance Council. However, every year the International Theatre Institute (ITI) features a special message from a distinguished choreographer or dancer as an inspirational celebration of the universal language of dance. This year, the message for 2024 is by Marianela Núñez, a renowned Argentine-British ballet dancer.
Marianela highlights the importance of preserving and honouring the history of dance and the contributions of masters, artists, and choreographers. Additionally, she calls for a collective commitment to recognise and revive the legacy of those who have shaped the world of dance, thereby emphasising the need to acknowledge our roots and traditions as the foundation for the future growth and flourishing of the art form.
International Dance Day is a special occasion that celebrates and signifies the power of movement and expression as a universal language and is observed to highlight the diversity of dance forms and to promote inclusivity and accessibility.
It is also a time to raise awareness about the significance of dance in our lives and to emphasise its value in education, health, and fostering understanding across borders. This celebration recognises the unique traditions and innovations within the world of dance and encourages everyone to participate in this beautiful art form.
