Unexpected rain and hail fell in several neighbourhoods in Maputo city and Matola municipality early on Tuesday evening.
Surprised citizens found backyards and streets flooded with ice to a depth which temporarily restricted vehicle traffic.
The hail tore leaves off plants, destroyed vegetables in the fields, and some houses were even left roofless. Power outages and current oscillation affected the Zimpeto, Magoanice C, Machava and Zona Verde neighbourhoods, among others.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has meanwhile forecast, for the provinces from Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, the occurrence, from late afternoon on Wednesday (June 2), of moderate to heavy rains (between 30 and 50 millimetres in 24 hours), accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
According to the INAM communique, the weather is likely to affect all districts of the city and province of Maputo; in Gaza, the districts of Massingir, Limpopo, Chonguene, Massangena, Guíjá, Mandlakazi, Bilene and cities of Chókwè and Xai-Xai; and in Inhambane, Zavala and Inharrime districts.
The districts mentioned could also experience low temperatures during the next five days, with the mercury oscillating between 20 and 12 degrees Celsius.
