The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, said in Lisbon on Monday that he was convinced that Mozambique was on the way to achieving lasting peace.
Speaking at a press conference after being recognised as Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Lisbon on a proposal from the Instituto Superior Técnico, Guterres said that it was the right of the Mozambican people to secure peace and a better quality of life.
“I hope that Mozambique can finally find the peace to which the Mozambican people are entitled, so that the economic difficulties that the country faces can be addressed in a positive way, and the quality of life that Mozambicans deserve become a reality,” Guterres, quoted by Lusa, said.
“I believe a peace agreement in Mozambique is soon to happen,” Guterres said.
The UN Secretary-General’s pronouncements were made on the same day that the president, Filipe Nyusi, met Afonso Dhlakama in Gorongosa (Monday, 19 February) to discuss disarmament, demobilisation and the reintegration of Renamo military personnel in the Defence and Security Forces.
The meeting came weeks after the head of state announced that consensus on changes in the nomination of provincial governors and district administrators and in the election of municipality mayors had been achieved.
These changes will require an amendment to the Republic’s constitution, a proposal for which has already been submitted for consideration and approval during the VII ordinary session of the Assembly of the Republic which starts on February 28, Wednesday of next week.
