More than fifty Guruè municipality workers in Zambézia boycotted celebrations of the city’s 48th anniversary on Monday, in protest at a claim for four months of overdue wages.
The wave of protest began in Heroes Square and ended at the doors of the municipality, with placards and chants demanding the payment of salaries for the December 2019, last years’ thirteenth-month bonus salary, plus their salaries for January and February.
The problem affects close to 250 workers, including some employed in the Municipal Assembly.
The representative of the Workers’ group, Miguel Braz, said that workers have vowed to strike if the debt is not paid within the next few days.
Guruè municipal council president José Aniceto has said he is open to dialogue and wants to arrive at a consensus with workers in order to solve the problem.
He has asked for calm while financial resources are mobilised for the payment of arrears, thought to be more than five million meticais.
Guruè administrator Costa Chirembwè was forced to intervene to calm spirits, and promised to hold talks with workers this Tuesday in the council chambers.
