Gunmen killed a person on Wednesday night and destroyed six houses in the village of Inguane in the northern Mozambican district of Macomia, local sources told Lusa on Friday.
The sources said the victim was a man and that the attackers were armed with machetes and an AK-47 rifle.
Residents have been able to spot at least seven members of the group that attacked the village, which is located in the administrative post of Mucojo in Cabo Delgado Province, over 2,000 kilometers from Maputo.
Wednesday’s attack was the first on the village of Inguane, but other spots in the Macomia district have already been targeted by armed groups that have been involved in violence in districts in Cabo Delgado since October last year.
Dozens of people have died as a result of the attacks, which have caused the displacement of people from their villages.
More than 100 people are being tried in Cabo Delgado following the attacks, which hit areas near the gas fields that will see huge investments from multinational oil companies in the coming years.
On the 19th of this month, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said in parliament that the Defense and Security Forces are weakening the “action of the evildoers” who work in Cabo Delgado.
