Gunmen dressed in Renamo uniforms attacked the village of Maringue in Sofala province at dawn yesterday, burning houses and shooting two unarmed civilians, one of whom is in a “very serious,” condition, Notícias reports today.
According to first provincial secretary of Frelimo Paulo Majacunene, the situation caused panic, but the prompt intervention of the Mozambique Defence and Security Forces in the area soon restored normality.
Speaking to reporters in Beira on the sidelines of a February 3 wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument to Mozambican Heroes in the district of Chota, Majacunene condemned the act as macabre.
