Portuguese lawyer Fernando Seara on Monday called for stability in Guinea-Bissau so that the country can take advantage of its potential, particularly in the tourism sector, describing the Bijagós archipelago as the “Caribbean of Africa”.
Sports commentator and former mayor of Sintra, elected by the PSD, Fernando Seara is in Bissau as part of the launch of the election campaign of the Democratic Alternation Movement (Madem-G15).
Seara told Lusa that he is in Bissau “as a friend” of Madem-G15 leader, Braima Camará, who is running for prime minister.
On the sidelines of the party’s youth congress, the politician and university professor talked about what he said were the paths that Guinea-Bissau should take after the legislative elections on 4 June, firstly creating stability, then confidence to make the most of the country’s potential.
In this regard, he pointed to the tourism sector and the Bijagós islands as the main attraction for investment that, he noted, “should and can be of interest” to Portugal.

The Portuguese academic gave the example of Ponta Achada, a resort on the island of Rubane, one of 88 Bijagós islands to “testify to the impressive potential” of Guinea-Bissau.
“I have been, for example to Ponta Anchaca, it is a resort from another world (…) I even wrote that I was in the Caribbean of Africa,” said Seara, who also noted that Guinea-Bissau “is only four hours away from Lisbon” by plane.
Seara told Lusa that he had already spoken to a Portuguese business group to invest in Guinea Bissau, which is just waiting for elections to be held in June.
The Portuguese lawyer also suggested that the future leaders of Guinea-Bissau should be pragmatic in taking advantage not only of the potential of the tourism sector, but also of energy production from the sun and organic matter.
Seara also praised the climate of confidence that Guinea-Bissau is beginning to regain internationally, giving as an example the approval of an assistance programme by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but also called for the country to acquire greater stability.
“Now it is necessary to demonstrate and show that confidence which is fundamental for investment whether for public financing, or for attractiveness, or for private financing,” noted Seara.
