The World Health Organization (WHO), in partnership with Build Health International, carried out a technical mission to Guinea-Bissau to assess oxygen production capacity in the United States Nations agency announced on Wednesday.
In a statement issued to the press, the WHO said that the mission, in support of the High Commission for the Fight against Covid-19, assessed the oxygen production capacity and electrical supply of the five factories in the country.
The biggest difficulties encountered, according to a specialist from Build Health International, Steve Mtewa, “were the lack of spare parts and the quality of electricity”.
“This is a very important mission for the country as well as for the WHO,” said the UN agency’s representative in Guinea-Bissau, Jean-Marie Kipela, stressing that the current pandemic has reinforced the need to have oxygen in the country.
The WHO representative in Guinea-Bissau also acknowledged the possibility of installing a new oxygen production plant at the Simão Mendes National Hospital, the country’s leading health facility.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Guinea-Bissau has recorded 6,103 cases of Covid-19 and 135 deaths.
