The Attorney General’s Office of Guinea-Bissau announced in a statement on Friday that it had issued an international arrest warrant against Domingos Simões Pereira, leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).
“The Public Prosecutor’s Office reports that it has already issued an international arrest warrant against the citizen Domingos Simões Pereira, as part of a criminal case that follows the legal procedures in this judicial institution that holds the criminal action,” the statement said.
Domingos Simões Pereira has been in Portugal for several months, having recently travelled to attend the inauguration ceremony of Alpha Conde, the President of Guinea-Conakry, a neighbouring country to Guinea-Bissau, which took place on Tuesday.
Simões Pereira disputed the presidential elections at the end of last year with the current President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who took office without waiting for the outcome of the electoral litigation that took place at the Supreme Court of Justice.
