Cashew nuts and biodiversity are the attractions of Guinea-Bissau at Expo 2020 Dubai, which on Wednesday marks the country’s national day, the Guinea-Bissau commissioner at the event, Francisca “Zinha” Vaz told Lusa on Tuesday.
The United Arab Emirates have provided Guinea-Bissau with a pavilion, which they built from scratch, in which information about the potential of the country is displayed with an emphasis on cashews, the “gold of Guinea-Bissau,” and the advantages in terms of biodiversity, she said.
“Guinea-Bissau is a country of a thousand rivers,” said Zinha Vaz, alluding to a concept that can be found in the country’s pavilion.
The Guinean commissioner, who is attending her third Expo (after Shanghai and Milan), said that she receives “many visits” from people interested in learning about and “who knows one day maybe investing” in Guinea-Bissau, based on the information displayed in the pavilion.
“We are showing that Guinea-Bissau is open to the world and has great potential in terms of biodiversity and cashews, which is the gold of Guinea-Bissau,” she noted and hopes to have a positive balance in March, when the world exhibition ends.
She welcomed the theme of the Dubai exhibition, “Connecting minds to build the future,” and said the sub-themes of the event were relevant: “Opportunity, mobility and durability.
Guinea-Bissau chose to be in the opportunity space with the vision of allowing everyone to unleash their potential in building their country and in the case of Guinea-Bissau having education as a focus, she noted.
In the Guinea-Bissau pavilion it is possible to find, in addition to text and video information on cashew and biodiversity, documents on what has been done in the country in terms of improving the education sector, Vaz said.
On Wednesday, the President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who travelled to Dubai on Monday ahead of a delegation of government ministers, is due to visit the country’s pavilion, where he will make a speech.
On the same day, there will be a meeting between members of the government and businessmen present at the Expo to gather information on the country’s potential, as well as a performance by musicians.
In February, the Bissau-Guinean representation at Expo Dubai will promote an investment forum and in March it will be the turn of the country’s women to participate in a world meeting dedicated to women’s issues.
Francisca Vaz told Lusa that all the work has been hampered due to the pandemic, which has already reached members of her delegation.
“It has not been easy, some pavilions have even had to close,” she said.
