Grindrod celebrated the second anniversary of its Bassopa Safety Culture Campaign in Maputo this week, with over 300 employees, contractors, and partners attending a lively event of cultural performances, personal stories, and awards recognising those who live safety daily and go above and beyond the company values.
At the event, Grindrod introduced The Grindrod Way, a newly established framework focused on driving business growth and operational effectiveness through a people-centric approach. Kwazi Mabaso, CEO of Grindrod Bulk Division, commented, “We are proud to present The Grindrod Way—an integrated model aimed at advancing both customer and operational excellence, while consistently prioritising safety, ethical standards, and our organisational Purpose.”
“What started as a campaign is now our culture,” said Pedro Poh Quong, COO of Grindrod Bulk Mozambique. “Teams routinely assess risks, speak up, and support each other. The real achievement is everyone returning home safely. With The Grindrod Way, we’re instilling the same care, discipline, and excellence into all our operations.”
Since its launch in 2023, the Bassopa campaign has contributed to substantial safety advancements, including a 62% reduction in Lost Time Injuries (LTI) and a 47% improvement in the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR). These results were achieved through proactive measures such as encouraging open communication, addressing near misses, implementing structured shift-closure procedures, and providing peer coaching.
The Grindrod Way encompasses Safety, Values and Ethics, Customer Excellence, Operational Excellence, and Recognition. It establishes clear key performance indicators (KPIs), promotes root-cause problem-solving, and reinforces the STIAD principles: Safely, Think, Identify, Assess, Do. This approach is designed to cultivate an environment that enables employees to achieve high performance, supports customer success, and ensures that Grindrod’s Purpose is consistently demonstrated throughout all operations.
