The entry into circulation of articulated vehicles in the Greater Maputo region will probably take about nine months, according to Metropolitan Transport Agency (AMT) chairman António Matos.
Matos explained that only the award process will have been completed by April, not the introduction of the vehicles themselves, contrary to what has been reported by some national newspapers.
“We are aware that this process will eventually take about nine months. It could be sooner, but that depends on flexibility and we don’t know the proposals yet,” he said. “At best, the bureaucratic process can only be finished by April.”
Another no less important aspect is that the tender, which was launched in December, has been extended for another 30 days, because “the bidders we received all asked for an extension of the deadline, so we extended it to February 16th”.
In turn, the technical administrator of the AMT, Armando Bembele, drew attention to the time it takes to manufacture the vehicles themselves.
“Another thing is that the vehicle market operates based on orders, so manufacturing only begins after the adjudication [of the tender],” Bembele observed.
Concerning the ‘Intelligent Transport System’ launched last August in partnership with the South Korean government, Matos said that the first phase will have been implemented by the end of 2024.
“It will be implemented by the end of 2024. The project is designed, and now we are talking with the South Korean government about financing,” he explained.
