The 19-year-old student who assaulted a colleague at the Secundaria Josina Machel with a knife is to be expelled from the school.
The two grade 10 students, aged 18 and 19, got into a fight after morning assembly on Friday 17 September 17 as they were heading back to their classroom. After the event, the two students were taken to Maputo Central Hospital for medical attention.
School director Armindo Mutimba, quoted by O Pais, said that the case had been reported to the police so they could open a criminal case against the attacker. Mutimba said there were frequent fights between students and young people who were known to use drugs on school premises.
City of Maputo Director of Education Beatriz Manjama said one student had been discharged from hospital, while the other was in police custody.
She added that her department would work with the school to ascertain the cause of the incident. “We think the situation may be related to the consumption of alcohol, given that the school is surrounded by ‘barracas’ (tuck shops), but we will find out what caused the violence on Monday,” she said.
