“It is important to strengthen the institutions of the state so that they can operate competently and protect national sovereignty in an exemplary way,” Graça Machel said at the official Independence Day ceremony at Praça dos Heróis.
Graça said that, even after 43 years of independence, Mozambicans were still resilient, and fighters, and had survived major challenges since independence. She called on the government to revisit economic development strategies and recognize that there were still Mozambicans living in poverty, and to protect sovereignty and strengthen state institutions.
“Despite the great challenges, we can say that Mozambique is standing tall,” she said.
Graça also reminds people that today Mozambique had trained people in all sectors, and that this workforce was able to keep the country on the path to development.
“The young graduates should know that it is their responsibility to put the country on the right path, individually and collectively,” she added.
