The government needs just over 2.8 billion meticais to fund the sinking and operation of more than 70 boreholes in the cities of Maputo and Matola and in the towns of Boane and Marracuene. The figure includes the laying of some 70 kilometers of water mains to minimize water shortages in the Greater Maputo region.
The Ministry of Public Works, Water Resources and Housing has already identified the locations for the boreholes and defined the priority measures.
Immediate measures include the opening of six boreholes at the Malanga and Maxaquene landfills in the city of Maputo. The package includes the operation of 22 boreholes in 10 Maputo and Matola city neighbourhoods.
The government expects the measures to boost water availability by 11,400 cubic meters per day. The works are budgeted at 43 million meticais, but the government only has 35 million available.
In the short term, it is planned to open and operate 40 boreholes in Maputo, Matola and Boane, including the construction of some 28 kilometers of pipe connecting the boreholes to distribution centers. These measures would provide enough water to supply 318,000 people a day, but the government does not at present have the 1.1 billion meticais needed to carry out the work.
