The Mozambican government has approved a 20-year Water Resources Management Plan estimated at US$13 billion. The newly approved plan covers the building of infrastructure throughout Mozambique river basins as a means of guaranteeing the supply of water, especially during the country’s cyclical droughts.
“The plan aims to contribute to the promotion of Mozambique’s socio-economic development, as well as to assess the availability of water resources and current and future demand,” spokeswoman for the Mozambican Council of Ministers Ana Comoana said in Maputo.
“The country is in a vulnerable situation and we need to manage these resources with some sustainability and caution,” Comoana said, adding that the funding for the project would come from both the state budget and partnerships.
The government estimates that the construction of the infrastructure will have economic benefits amounting to about US$28 billion (24 billion Euros).
