The governments of Mozambique and Palestine on Friday in Maputo signed a memorandum of understanding to enable cooperation in the fields of agriculture, health, education, and mineral resources.
The agreement was signed by Foreign Minister Jose Pacheco and the Director of the Palestinian International Cooperation Agency Imad Al Zuhairi.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Pacheco said the accord will enable the two governments to work even closer together. He pointed out they have longstanding ties of friendship through political and diplomatic cooperation.
The Minister explained they chose these sectors after a careful analysis of the factors which contribute to fruitful cooperation. This included evaluating comparative advantages. He added that the memorandum formalises cooperation already underway on the ground, especially around health.
Pacheco reiterated “our government prioritises developing partnerships aimed at attracting sufficient investment for the sustainable development of our natural resources with tangible benefits for communities along with generating the wealth necessary for driving economic and social development”.
He stressed the Mozambican government’s identification with the Palestinian cause and its support for the initiatives of the international community to reach a definitive understanding through dialogue which satisfies all parties.
Palestine’s ambassador, Fayez Abdul Jawad, pointed out that Mozambique has always been on the side of the Palestinians and stated this support is one reason the two countries are cooperating so intensively.
Speaking of the memorandum of understanding, he stressed: “this is the first step in strengthening and broadening our cooperation”. He added that cooperation already exists and gave by way of example the fact that Palestinian surgeons regularly came to Mozambique to carry out spinal surgery.
