The Mozambican government hopes the entire population will have identification (ID) cards by 2030, Civil Identification Directorate spokesman Alberto Sumbane told Lusa on Tuesday.
“This is the goal we want to achieve, and we will be adopting a set of strategies, mainly in rural areas, to this end,” Sumbane said.
The Civil Identification Directorate will deploy brigades to facilitate registration, focussing on rural areas. The strategy also includes awareness campaigns to ensure that communities realise the importance of registration.
“Rural areas are going to be our main bet,” Sumbane added.
Official data provided by the Directorate of Civil Identification indicate that just over ten million Mozambicans have identity cards out of a total population of around 29 million, according to National Statistics Institute figures.
Figures released in August by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa indicate that more than 500 million Africans do not have identity cards, and about 120 million children on the continent have not had their births registered.
