The government is verifying contracts signed with mining companies operating in Mozambique to identify possible mistakes made in negotiations.
According to Luís Matsinhe, head of the department in the Finance and Economy Ministry of Mozambique which oversees this sector, the operation is intended to maximise mining operation profits and furnish officials working in the area with better tools for negotiating mining contracts.
Matsinhe was speaking in Maputo on Wednesday during a seminar on institutional capacity-building for government officials in contract negotiations in the mining area sponsored by the African Development Bank.
The African Development Bank’s representative, João Mabombo, said Mozambique needs qualified staff able to negotiate multinational company contracts that deliver fair financial gains and benefits to communities.
