Carlos Mesquita, Minister of Transport and Communications, says the government is concerned to make Mozambique’s ports safes, especially in the light of the recent fire and robbery in Matola.
Speaking during a visit to the port of Beira, Mesquita says that Mozambique has a key role to play in ensuring the safety of goods and growing export volumes, and the government wants to address weaknesses.
Speaking in turn, Interior Minister Jaime Basilio Monteiro said that work was underway throughout the country to strengthen safety in Mozambican ports, and that patrols would be stepped up to prevent outsiders from accessing port and rail facilities.
According to the Monteiro, port facilities in the country had recently been targeted by thieves, rendering it a matter of urgency to implement more effective security measures in all Mozambican ports and avoid a repeat of Matola case.
The main objective of Minister Monteiro’s visit to Beira port was to learn about its normal functioning and study the places where joint protection and security forces might be stationed.
