The Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, said the government was doing everything it could to pay the thirteenth month salary and asks companies to trust the government, since it had not yet said that it would not pay.
Speaking on Friday in Maputo after a meeting of CPLP Customs Directors, Maleiane said that the government would make an announcement shortly.
“I have already said that the 13th salary is paid when conditions allow. We are working on it, and we usually make a decision at the beginning of December, so what I can say is that there will soon be an announcement. We need to settle the accounts and make sure we will have no problems in the future,” Maleiane said.
The minister said that everything was being done so that the government could pay the wages as a way of motivating employees.
Last week, the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) suggested that the government should suspend the payment of the 13th salary and freeze the promotion of officials in order to cope with the economic crisis the country faces.
Maleiane said that every organisation and citizen has a right to their opinion, but surely society would understand that this was not the position of the government, and that the president of the CTA was not speaking on their behalf.
“I hope that society trusts the government, and that there is no panic, because we are working for our civil servants to regain regularity in terms of administrative acts,” he said.
“The only thing we need to know is that the government has always wanted the employee to have the minimum that we are achieving, and when it is impossible, we announce the same some time in advance, and if this is not yet announced, it means we are still working on achieving this goal,” he said.
Addressing the XXXII meeting of the Council of Director Generals of Customs of the Countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, Maleiane said that the world-wide market economy and the context of a growth slowdown worldwide required from customs more efficient collaboration aiming at greater control of tax evasion, smuggling and cross-border fraud.
