The National Institute of Petroleum (INP) yesterday held a public presentation in the city of Pemba, in Cabo Delgado recommending the construction of a gas pipeline linking Palma in the north of Mozambique to Maputo in the south.
Speaking at the international conference on gas, graphite and land value chains, the National Director of Supervision and Safety at the National Oil Institute (INP), Natalia Camba, recommended the proposed pipeline, part of the government’s strategy for the domestic consumption of Palma’s natural gas, to national and foreign investors.
According to Camba, the pipeline, which will go from Palma to Pemba, Nacala-Porto, Nampula, Quelimane, Mocuba, Beira and Matola, presents a great business opportunity.
The Master Plan for Natural Gas, approved last year by the cabinet, promotes sustainable development based on inter-sectoral coordination in the implementation of natural gas development activities.
Discoveries of natural gas in the Rovuma basin are sufficient to export in substantial quantities as well as satisfying domestic demand.
The government of Cabo Delgado, represented at the event by the provincial governor, Celmira da Silva, requires investment finance and human capital to be able to capitalise on the discovery of large amounts of natural gas and other minerals such as graphite, as well on agricultural, forestry, water, marine and tourist resources in a structured way.
The international conference on gas, graphite and agriculture industry value chains, the first of its kind in Pemba, started yesterday with the aim of identifying potential investors, markets and ways of implementing support infrastructure and services for value chains.
Speaking at the official opening act of the event, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Pedro Couto said: “I am convinced that Mozambique will perform successfully, innovating and implementing structural changes in the natural resource field in order to increase employment.”
The conference, which ends tomorrow, is being attended by businessmen from India, Brazil, Japan, China and other countries interested in business opportunities in the gas industry.
