The government is planning to construct a new central power generation station in the city of Lichinga (Niassa Province) in order to cover the electricity deficit in the area.
The future power station in Lichinga is expected to run on coal, which means that its construction will spur the exploitation of existing reserves in Niassa.
Alternatively, the station could make use of coal from Moatize (Tete Province.
Despite the plans for the new station, budgetary restrictions are delaying the completion of the construction.
However, President Filipe Nyusi said that the government will continue to mobilise the necessary resources to facilitate this initiative.
