The government of Inhambane and partners this Monday delivered 210 houses made of wood, cement, stone and zinc sheets to the victims of the 2017 Cyclone Dineo in the Machavenga neighbourhood on the municipality’s outskirts.
The project was funded by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in partnership with the municipal and provincial governments, and cost nearly half a million dollars.
“This is the result of a joint effort between various provincial organs, among them the Municipality of Inhambane and the Directorate of Public Works Water Resources and Housing. In January of this year we signed a cooperation agreement with the United States government through the IOM, whose fruits we see today,” Governor of Inhambane Province Daniel Chapo said on the occasion.
Governor Chapo said that he had held weekly meetings with the partners in order to push forward strategies to deal with the effects of the gale that had devastated the province.
Ana Furukawa, a representative of IOM, said the project was a one-off response aimed at easing the suffering of the victims.
“We have supported the project on a temporary basis so that the victims of last year’s cyclone here in the province have a safe place to lay their heads,” she explained.
Although the electricity supply remains to be connected, beneficiaries could barely hide their emotions.
“We went to live with neighbours, relatives and acquaintances after we lost our homes, but later they offered us tents, which relieved the suffering a little. But now we are happy with this offer of houses” Inácio Sebastião said on behalf of the beneficiaries.
The 210 houses, erected in three different districts, took six months to construct.

“I had taken refuge just a few hours before Cyclone Dineo hit and came back afterwards only to find my house destroyed. At first I had to rely on my neighbours but could not stay there too long. I’m so happy for this house – thank you so much!” @theOFDA @iom_moz @USAIDMozambique pic.twitter.com/v84XtEB7Qm
