The International Conference to Evaluate Management Strategies running today and tomorrow under the motto “Alternatives to the financing and management of public resources for the health sector in Mozambique” has revealed that Mozambique invests US$79 per year on the health of each Mozambican, well below the regional average of US$163 per year.
“Investment in the health sector in terms of both percentage and per capita terms should increase alongside investment in social determinants, so that Africa can increase opportunities to achieve the goals of sustainable development in the health sector,” the vice-rector of the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM), Armindo Tambo, pointed out.
One of the objectives of the conference is to stimulate debate on the management of health sector resources as well as alternative financing mechanisms in the context of economic and financial crisis.
“The conference aims to gather, from everyone, experiences and ideas that will be the basis for improving health public management and health financing, making it more efficient and equitable,” Tambo said.
According to a 2017 UNICEF report, the health sector accounted for 7.8 percent in the state budget, less than the previous year.
Mozambique has seen a reduction in the rate of infant and maternal mortality, but malaria, chronic malnutrition, tuberculosis and HIV mean life expectancy in Mozambique is only 55 years.
