The government, employers and trade unions are meeting in Maputo today to consider a draft Law creating labour courts in the country.
According to Minister of Labour Employment and Social Security Vitória Diogo says Law 18/92 of 14 October, which establishes the creation of courts to resolve labour disputes, must be adequate to the current situation in the country.
Diogo says that the need for revision arises from preparations to introduce the labour courts.
“It is a 1992 law, and has been around a long time. It is important to adapt it before we establish these courts, because there has been development at country level and our intention is to conform the prerogatives provided for in the labour law to the present day, so that, when implemented, the courts can respond to the challenges that emerge in labour relations,” she said.
The government also argues that it is necessary to increase production and productivity and reduce work-related accidents, Diogo said.
In addition to the labour law, the Labour Advisory Committee is also considering the constitutionality of hiring foreign labour in the country and International Labour Organisation conventions on health and safety at work.
