The Mozambican government and Renamo, the main opposition party, said yesterday that they are waiting for responses from the European Union (EU), the Catholic Church and South Africa to the invitation to mediate in peace talks in Mozambique.
“We have not had an answer from the entities invited to mediate the negotiations, but they have shown openness,” José Manteigas told the press on behalf of the delegations at the end of another round of negotiations to end the political and military crisis in Mozambique.
Manteigas, a Renamo MP, said that in yesterday’s session the two delegations reached agreement on the terms of reference of the participation of mediators in the negotiations, but deferred the disclosure of details to when mediators begin participating in the process.
The two teams also reached agreement yesterday on the integration of the six new Joint Committee members.
Filipe Nyusi and Afonso Dhlakama announced this month that they had reached consensus on the participation of international mediators in negotiations to end the clashes between Mozambican defence and security forces and the armed wing of Renamo.
Although the two sides have resumed negotiations, the attacks of alleged Renamo armed men against civilian and military vehicles in several of the country’s central sections have not ceased, and the movement accuses the defence and security forces of intensifying the bombardment of Gorongosa, where the leader of the main opposition party, Afonso Dhlakama, is staying.
