Mozambique: Trade deficit worsens 26.4% in 2024 to $2.231B
Jornal Notícias / Ernesto Gove, governor of Mozambique's Central Bank.
The governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Ernesto Gove called on the private sector to position itself better in order to benefit from the emergence of major projects, especially through the provision of goods and services.
Speaking at the opening on Monday of a Standard Bank branch in Pemba, Cabo Delgado, Gove urged Mozambican business-people to increase production and productivity in order to reduce imports.
In his speech, Gove said that economic stakeholders, especially in micro, small and medium enterprises, now have another opportunity to develop essential investments and leverage the national economy, especially in the province of Cabo Delgado.
“Investments should also be orientated towards the productive sector to increase exports and reduce imports, because only with the determination of each and every Mozambican can we gradually reduce our trade deficit and guarantee sustainable development,” the central bank governor said.
The opening of the new branch of Standard Bank was also attended by the Governor of Cabo Delgado province, Celmira da Silva, and members of the bank’s executive committee.
Also speaking at the opening, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Standard Bank, Tomaz Salomão, said that the agency located in the Cariacó neighbourhood, the most populous district of Pemba, was designed so that businessmen and families in the city could find all the financial solutions they need to move forward in a comfortable environment.
“This new branch, a response to demand from local entrepreneurs, is also part of the efforts we continually make to better serve all our business partners with a range of services and universal banking products,” Salomao said.
The Governor of Cabo Delgado, Celmira da Silva, expressed the government’s intention to contribute to the restructuring and strengthening of the local private sector with regard to training, financing and, above all, the provision of better services.
“We want our province to have access to domestically manufactured products and find better quality in supermarkets or companies that buy such products. We want the quality of the products and services offered by our entrepreneurs to be world class, and we see Standard Bank as a partner in a fruitful dialogue with the private sector and government, to reach the goals that we have set out to achieve,” da Silva said.
With the opening of the Cariacó branch, Standard Bank now has two branches in Pemba.
