For the second year running, Time Magazine has released a list of the ‘World’s Greatest Places’ and Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park is among the chosen ones this year.
Time Magazine has chosen Gorongosa National Park as one of the top 100 destinations in the world on the basis of its wildlife restoration work and relationship with local communities.
It’s easy to see why Gorongosa National Park made it to the annual list of World’s Greatest Places for Time Magazine. Park restoration started in 2004 after years of damage during the civil war, and has since evidenced a nature conservation mission recognised all over the world.
Fauna decimated during the war are now roams the plains. Ten years ago, the park had 10,000 large animals; today it has close to 100,000.
But Time Magazine chose Gorongosa National Park not only for its wildlife recovery achievements but also for investing in local communities.
One-third of the park’s budget finances community support programmes, health posts, Cyclone Idai Victim Support Centres, sustainable agriculture projects outside of the reserve and schools championing equal opportunities between boys and girls.
According to Time Magazine visiting Gorongosa Park conveys the feeling that something absolutely extraordinary has happened on Planet Earth.
#Gorongosa National Park is one of the #WorldsGreatestPlaces according to @TIME magazine. Nominated by editors, correspondents and industry experts worldwide, each entry is evaluated on quality, originality, sustainability, innovation and influence.https://t.co/mdGhquOZFo
