The Port of Beira, which in October completes 25 years under management of Cornelder de Moçambique (CdM), has since April 28, counted on one more shipping line, the Gold Star Line (GSL), an Asian corporation based in Hong Kong.
The first vessel of this new line, the Contship Ono, docked at the Port of Beira on Friday, April 28, around 10:00 a.m. The GSL will provide containerized cargo transportation services, connecting the Port of Beira to the Far East, via Southwest Asia, through Singapore and Mauritius.
The Gold Star Line will operate, in this first phase, fortnightly, and may later berth its ships once a week.
The Deputy Executive Director of Cornelder de Moçambique, António Libombo, who welcomed the crew of the Contship Ono and its agent, Diamond Shipping Services, said that the fact that the Port of Beira has recently been classified by the World Bank as the best port in the southern region in terms of performance of containerized cargo, has boosted the entry of the new shipping line, because “this international recognition made the negotiation process easier, which we have been doing for years and which is now materializing.

“We have been trying to attract new lines for six years and finally, after a lot of work and great commitment in the commercial area, it was possible to attract the Gold Star Line, which is an Asian line and is based in Hong Kong. This is a great achievement, in that we can offer more and better services and also more quality, to our customers, both in Mozambique and in the region”, said António Libombo.
The entry of the new line comes in response to the desire of operators, who have long clamored for more shipping lines at the Port of Beira. Libombo also revealed that “we are currently negotiating another new navigation line, of international dimension, which will represent an excellent gain for the country and for the region”.
A new line brings many advantages, it makes the corridor more competitive, and customers have more options available in terms of shipping lines and also, destinations for their export products.
GSL is the fifth shipping line to operate at the Port of Beira in addition to MSC, PIL, MAERSK and CMA-CGM which already operated at the Port of Beira.
The Port of Beira Container Terminal is one of the most modern in the Southern African region and has at its service modern computerized management systems produced in-house such as CDMS, C-Gate, CommTrac, which aim to meet the specific needs and integrate on to the Navis N4 system, regarded as the most advanced in the world port industry.
