With support from the United Nations, the Global Shapers Community of Maputo has launched recently the Mozambique Sustainability Forum in Maputo.
The Mozambique Sustainability Forum will bring together youth, academics, public and private entities, decision makers and civil society for a debate on the 17 Mozambique Sustainable Development Objectives determined by the United Nations and implemented as of January 1, 2016, with the aim of transforming Mozambique by the year 2030.
Project manager Eliana Nzualo, says the Global Shapers Community of Maputo’s objective is to include young Mozambicans in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
“We want to include young people in the debates on SDGs (sustainable development goals), making them more participatory and creating synergies with non-governmental organizations, government, private initiatives and the whole of civil society,” Nzualo said. Only with the involvement of youth could the country possible achieve the 17 UN-defined SDGs, she added.
Ney Cardoso, UN social mobilisation officer in Mozambique, who was also present, explained that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aimed to make the world a better place for people to live by 2030. “It is in this context that the United Nations supports the government and civil society of Mozambique and the world to make these goals a reality,” he said.
Cardoso called on youth to participate massively in the 20 September Mozambique Sustainability Forum, saying that “it is the youth of today who will implement this agenda, since in 13 years they will be the leaders of the nation and the driving force behind development.”
The Global Shapers Community is an initiative of the World Economic Forum, made up of an international network of 459 communities in cities around the world, including Mozambique. It is working towards sustainable development goals by creating and developing impactful social projects.
