The Global Partnership for Education announced on Thursday in Maputo aid worth EUR51 million (US$57 million) for initiatives aimed at raising the quality of education in Mozambique.
The support of the Global Partnership for Education, a platform that matches donors with poor countries’ efforts to promote quality education, was announced by executive director Alice Albright, at the end of a meeting with Prime Minister Agostinho do Rosario.
“Our financial commitment to Mozambique totals US$57 million, and we are finalizing the details for disbursement of the money from May this year to 2018,” Albright said.
The money, said the Global Partnership executive director, will support the promotion of quality education and is intended to increase the progress that the alliance with the Mozambican authorities has already achieved.
“Meetings with Mozambican authorities and field visits indicate that the country has been making progress in the education sector, but we still have a huge potential for cooperation, not least because the challenges in these areas continue to grow,” Albright said.
Albright added that since joining the partnership, Mozambique has already received US$227 million (EUR203 million euros).
National and international studies indicate that Mozambique has among the poorest levels of education in the Southern African Development Community, with a lack of basic reading and writing skills among primary school students.
