Mozambique: Ossufo Momade postpones Renamo National Council

Of the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde has the highest ranking in the Freedom House report released last Tuesday, while Angola is the worst, and the only Lusophone in the group of ‘Not Free’ countries.
Cape Verde scored 90 points on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being the highest ranking. The country received top marks for political rights and civil liberties, and is considered a ‘Free’ country also in terms of freedom of the press.
São Tomé and Príncipe is also among the ‘Free’ countries, with 81 points, but the report does not detail other aspects.
Mozambique is considered ‘Partly Free’, with 53 points on a scale of 100. On a scale of one to seven, where seven is ‘Not Free’, Mozambique has four in both civil liberties and political rights, while in the category of freedom of the press, it is again classified ‘Partly Free’.
Guinea-Bissau is also among the ‘Partly Free’ countries, with 40 points out of a hundred. For political rights and civil liberties, it got five out of seven.
Angola is the only Portuguese-speaking African country in the group of ‘Not Free’.
The 2017 report on Global Freedom Freedom released yesterday gives Angola six out of seven, where seven is the least free. It gets the same for political rights and civil liberties, while for press freedom it also gets a ‘Not Free’ ranking, while ‘Partly Free’ as regards the internet.
Both Portugal and Brazil are among the free countries, with Portugal achieving 97 points (from 0 to 100) and Brazil 79 points. Timor-Leste is among the partially free countries, with 65 points out of 100.
