Parents and guardians raised 45,000 meticais and bought material to paint 28 classrooms at Laulane Complete Primary School in Maputo, where 3,000 students are enrolled in the current academic year.
The Complete Primary School of Laulane, located in the neighbourhood of the same name on the outskirts of the city of Maputo, is 34 years old but has seen little in the way of rehabilitation.
This is where 12-year-old Olices Macuácua studies, in seventh grade. Olices says that he started Grade 1 at the same school seven years ago and that, before the re-painting, the school was in very poor condition.
“Many people didn’t like the school, and even my friends speak said it was poorly painted, but today it is repainted, and there are many who want to be here,” the young student in his blue uniform and carrying a backpack-full of books said.
Another person also very happy that the school now has a new image is teacher Célia Fumo, who has been teaching at there for five years. She says the upgrade has raised the teachers’ self-esteem, and that she is better motivated in the new, improves environment.
School Director Jeremias Chiconce welcomed the school council’s initiative and says that the school he runs is now more attractive. There is still room for a few more enrolments.
“The maximum capacity of the school is 5,000 students, and this year we have 3.000 enrolled. We think that some parents did not enrol their children here because of its appearance. But now the image of the school has improved, we believe that there will be more students coming here. We still have vacancies and they can come and enrol the children. We will take them,” Chiconce said.
The City of Maputo has 18,839 Grade 1 students in the current academic year, against the 22,230 planned. Currently, the country’s capital has 101 schools teaching Grade 1, of which 33 have reached their enrolment goals.
