The Federal Deputy and Member of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development of the German Parliament, Jan-Niclas Gesenhues, has been making an official visit to Mozambique between the 6th and 10th of March, with the aim of deepening relations of friendship and cooperation between Germany and Mozambique.
During his stay in Mozambique, the German federal deputy held official meetings with Deputy-Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel José Gonçalves, where he learned about the political situation in the country, with particular emphasis on the situation in Cabo Delgado, characterised by the fight that the government and partners are waging against terrorism. Subsequently, he also met with the commander of the European Union Training Mission in Mozambique (EUTM Mozambique), Brigadier General Pires, and exchanged views on the process of training units of Mozambique’s armed forces.
Before travelling to Cabo Delgado province to learn on the ground about the humanitarian and security situation in the north of the country, Jan-Niclas Gesenhues met representatives of the Frelimo, Renamo and MDM parliamentary benches, as well as different actors and representatives of civil society.
In Cabo Delgado province, the German deputy met the Secretary of State for the province, the Governor of the province and the president of the Integrated Northern Development Agency. (ADIN}. “These meetings allowed us to learn even more about the challenges that the province faces and about the government’s plans to face them, especially within the scope of the Cabo Delgado Reconstruction Plan,” Jan-Niclas Gesenhues said.
Germany is the second largest bilateral donor of humanitarian aid in the world, having already channelled around €43 million to United Nations agencies and NGOs, most of which went to Cabo Delgado. It is in this context that Jan-Niclas Gesenhues travelled to Metuge district to also learn about the activities of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and visit the Nanjua resettlement centre.
Before ending his visit to the province, Deputy Gesenhues met representatives of the various religious confessions in a meeting organised by the Council of Religions in Mozambique (COREM), and learned about the efforts they have made to give comfort to the faithful at this difficult time.
Since part of German humanitarian aid goes to mitigate the consequences of natural disasters (cyclones, drought) in the country, accompanied by the Administrator of the District of Macomia and by the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD), the federal deputy toured the city to see at first hand the damage caused by climate change.
In a press conference, the Federal Deputy and Member of the Cooperation and Development Committee of the German Parliament stressed the following:
“With my visit, I would like to demonstrate that, despite the current difficult situation in Europe, we, as members of the European Parliament, are closely following the development of the conflict in Cabo Delgado. I wanted to gather first-hand information so that we can respond politically to the needs arising from the conflict. In the meetings, it became clear that the military presence in Cabo Delgado has also stabilised the situation for the time being, while however, the conflict is far from over. A lasting solution must go far beyond military intervention. We need humanitarian aid for the many displaced and affected people. At the same time, programs to support host communities are needed. In addition to direct responses to the conflict, the meetings I held also focused on other areas with opportunities for closer cooperation between our countries. I see great potential for cooperation, for example, in the areas of climate change adaptation, protection of biodiversity, vocational training, energy, the circular economy and waste management.”

Militärpräsenz hat vorerst Stabilisierung gebracht aber der Konflikt ist nicht gelöst, einzelne Terrorzellen sind nach wie vor aktiv.
