The German company Muhlbauer Mozambique Lda on Monday began producing identity documents and biometric passports as part of a contract signed with the Mozambican government in November 2017. In the initial phase the company will produce between eight and twelve thousand documents of each type per day from its three production lines.
Muhlbauer won an international tender to replace the previous contract holder, the Belgian company Semlex Europe. In 2009, Semlex signed with the government a BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer) contract, valid for 10 years for the supply of secure solutions for the production of identity cards, travel documents, identification and residence documents for foreigners (DIRE) and frontier visas.
According to the Interior Minister, Basilio Monteiro, the new documents will include nine security features to protect against forgeries (for example, ID documents will have embedded microchips to store encrypted information). Monteiro also noted that unlike the previous provider, Muhlbauer has been training Mozambican technicians to run the service.
Another advantage of the system is that some document services will be made available at several Embassies and High Commissions around the world such as in Germany, Portugal, Brazil, United States, and South Africa. In the past, citizens living outside the country were forced to return to Mozambique to update their details and renew documents.
