Mozambique: New INAE general inspector challenged to strengthen measures against illegal trade
The German authorities have advised Mozambique to strengthen good practices of governance, particularly transparency in debt management.
“They transmitted the need for good governance practices, such as transparency”, said Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, when asked if the question of the Mozambican foreign debt had been mentioned in his discussions during his two day official visit to Germany, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Nyusi made it clear that this was indeed one of the matters that marked his talks with German government figures. Nyusi arrived in Berlin less than a week after the International Monetary fund (IMF) had cancelled a mission to Maputo because of undisclosed government guaranteed loans in excess of a billion US dollars.
In a press conference with the Mozambican journalists who accompanied him to Germany, Nyusi stressed the need to cultivate among Mozambicans a spirit similar to that of Germany, a country that does not despair even when faced with anomalous situations.
“Governing is exchanging experiences”, he said. “Germany is a solid country. It has survived many challenges and has emerged well. Now the world, including Mozambique, is not in a good situation. It’s true that Mozambicans should not be happy about this, but we should also not fall into despair. Instead we should transform this sort of situation, to see how we can survive at all moments, and with all kinds of problems”.
Asked if he had given his German hosts any guarantee about a return to effective peace in Mozambique, Nyusi said that guarantee is the will of the Mozambican people to preserve peace.
“We said that we are going to talk, to hold a dialogue. Not violence, but tolerance”, he added. In return “we received guarantees of assistance”, in whatever may be possible, taking into account that Germany respects the sovereignty and independence of Mozambique.
“When things are said clearly, a solution is easily found”, said Nyusi. “We feel that this country is very well disposed to assist because it wants to invest in Mozambique”.
