According to the Diário da Zambézia, Deputy Commander General of the Mozambique Police José Weng San has been in Zambezia since yesterday on a visit that “can [only] be considered secret, since it is taking place without announcement and in all confidentiality”.
Weng arrived yesterday afternoon and met colleagues in the Provincial Police Command, but Diario da Zambezia reporters on the spot to ascertain the purpose of the deputy commander’s visit were prevented from talking to him on the grounds that, according to provincial command Head of Public Relations Ernesto Serrote, “the presence of the press was not necessary”.
Weng arrives in Zambezia at a time when the province is witnessing numerous fatal clashes between Renamo and the defence and security forces, and his visit may be linked to the “Machiavellian” strategies he is known to favour in these situations.
The Diário da Zambézia promises to continue following the Deputy General Commander’s movements and post updates as they come in.
