Ten people died and 14 suffered injuries of varying severity in a traffic accident on Tuesday in Gaza’s Bilene district. Seven people died at the scene and three at Xai-Xai Provincial Hospital. Two children are among the injured.
According to Gaza police spokesman Edgar Juvane, the crash, involving a minibus on the Massinga-South Africa route and a lorry travelling north, occurred at 7:50 p.m. at the entrance to the municipal village of Macia.
The accident happened as the truck was overtaking. Its driver was unable to control the vehicle, which crashed into the minibus.
Five of the injured are currently in the Xai-Xai Provincial Hospital, and another three at the Macia Health Centre. According to Mendes Chongo, the technical director of the largest hospital in the Gaza province, one of them is suffering from multiple injuries and the others from fractures.
“Patients who are currently hospitalised are not serious, except one who has a head injury and will be transferred to Maputo Central Hospital for further treatment,” he explained.
The governor of Gaza, Stella Pinto Zeca, visited the victims in Xai-Xai Provincial Hospital on Wednesday, and called on drivers to be cautious and to avoid travelling at night, a call echoed by the police spokesman.
“We would like to appeal to drivers to observe the rules of the road when taking to the roads,” he said.
The deceased all came from Massinga, and inquiries to identify relatives are under way .
“We are appealing to anybody with a family member who left Massinga for South Africa on Tuesday to contact the authorities in Gaza,” Governor Zeca said.
