The province of Gaza is looking with concern at an upward trend in the number of Mozambicans returning from neighbouring South Africa illegally, fearing that these individuals could become the source of Covid-19 community transmission.
“We are seeing, above all, in the last few days, an increase in the number of infections. Our major concern lies in two factors, namely, the fact that we have our brothers, fellow citizens who work in South Africa and others who enter through legal channels and, after screening, show 20 to 30% positive cases. Then we have those who enter illegally, who do not have effective control because, as the name implies, they arrive here in the province illegally. We are sure that some of them may be infected, and so the transmission happens without our control,” Governor of Gaza Margarida Mapanzene told our reporter.
There are no official figures, but she admits that, with the borders closed, a considerable number of citizens returning enter illegally.
The authorities point out the measures adopted to stop illegal entry and allow for health control of those who have already entered.
“We are reinforcing surveillance at our borders and, at the same time, we are satisfied with the collaboration of the communities, whom we call on to tell us whenever there are cases of newcomers from neighbouring South Africa, so that we can control and screen,” the provincial governor explained.
Gaza province currently has 38 positive cases of Covid-19, and has reported one death from the disease.
